Wood fired faux bois tree stump vase, dark alkaline glaze, 10.25″
$180.00
This piece is inspired by classic european faux bois (false wood) wares which where produced from the late french Renaissance to the peak of the artform in the 19th century.
Traditional pieces where made with everything from earthenware and salt glaze stoneware to plaster, wax, and later cement.. but this one is hand turned on my potting wheel using my local wild clay and fired in wood fueled carolina groundhog kiln. The combination of the intense heat, the high iron clay, the smoke, the wood ash, and the dark traditional alkaline glaze really give the rustic charm of a weathered old stump. Standing at 10.25″, it is perfect for the display of fresh cut or dry flowers, or use in the kitchen for your favorite wooden spoons.
Do note, due to the extreme heat of the groundhog kiln, this piece has a small bloat (a blister cause by overheating the clay) on the bottom of the piece. The small crack on the surface of the bloat if from the expansion, but neither the crack or the bloat extend to the inside, so it is still fully water tight and functional. Besided this, the piece is pristine, but i have adjusted the price accordingly. The process of making wood fired pots with wild stoneware can be unpredictable, but with it comes the lesson of learning to love the one of a kind imperfections, that maybe we can apply the lesson elsewhere
