Royal skull #1, wheel thrown sculpture with carved motifs, wood fired stoneware
$300.00
BEHOLD THE HEAD OF A KING!
This unique piece is based on the reliquary and trophy skulls of old, isnt the skull just a fascinating form anyhow?
The body of this skull is actually a wheel thrown form which has been turned, trimmed, modified, and skulpted upon to achieve the entirety of the shape. I have hand incised a classic motif featuring foliage and the royal fleur-de-lis, hence the name of the piece. The carving is done by meticulously pressing into the clay with wooden tools rather than removing material which gives the pattern a very unique look, which is further highlighted by the use of an inlaid rutile slip.
As always, this work is lovingly hand made using wild stoneware clay which i dig locally. it has been fired to over 2350f in a wood burning kiln, which really brings out the natural beauty of the naked clay body, form, incised pattern, and slip, and yields a rustic glow which is beyond description. It stands about 5.5″ high (just under average life sized), making it perfec for display on your desk, bookshelf, or curio cabinet.
