“Ride the snake”, hand turned stoneware crock with incised snake and lyrics, 13″
$450.00
This crock i am offering perfectly rides the line between old and new, a very traditional southern crock form, made with very traditional materials and techniques, but with a very unconventional decorative motif… this is a line i enjoy riding in my work.
The crock is hand turned using hand dug wild stoneware clay, which i harvest locally, and process by hand. This short necked crock form was rather widespread among the folk potterys of the past, and with the addition of elegant but stury lug handles, really glorifies the charm of yesteryear. The motif however, is rather more contemporary… i have hand drawn and carefully incised this piece using a variety of wooden sticks to press the pattern into the still soft body of the pot. A long, winding serpent meanders its way around the crock, accompanied by the famous “ride the snake” verse, written by jim morrison in the song “the end” by the psychedelic rock band “the doors”.
This crock stands at about 13″ height, and has been dressed in my hand made “stone ash” glaze, and fired to over 2350f in a wood fueled kiln, making it a very sturdy and fascinating showpiece. Its size and stature make it perfect for large arrangements as well, perfect for fresh cut or dried flowers, your favorite seasonal branches, even large enough for a bouquet of sunflowers is you wish.
